The St. Luke's Boise Emergency Department (ED) is state-of-the-art, yet designed with the patient's safety and comfort in mind. A dedicated team of professionals are available twenty four hours a day for everything from catastrophic injury or illness to scraped knees and sore throats. On an average day, more than 100 people come through the doors of the Boise ED for treatment. When they arrive, patients and their families find:

  • Completely separate entrances for patients arriving by ambulance and those arriving by private car.
  • 24-7 availability of an Emergency-Medicine board eligible/certified physician, with another on call. Physician coverage is based on a routine pattern of ED patient visits, which during peak hours can mean as many as three ED physicians on duty at one time to facilitate our goal of "physician to patient" time is within 30 minutes.
  • Bedside registration. As a general rule, patients are taken immediately to a treatment room, rather than waiting and filling out paperwork in the lobby area. This enhances privacy and helps to alleviate anxiety.
  • A waiting room with a play area for families with young children, as well as a separate waiting area for those who prefer a quieter atmosphere.
  • A special, self-contained decontamination room for treating patients who may have been exposed to hazardous materials. Patients are decontaminated without staff, visitors or other patients being exposed.
  • Twenty-nine private treatment rooms, all of which feature a TV/VCR for patient and family use
  • Cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring capacities in each of the 29 rooms, should the need arise.
  • Separate areas for minor and major medical emergencies.
  • A special area just for kids; what you'd expect from Idaho's only children's hospital. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of critical care rooms, children and their parents will find colorful murals on floors and walls, cheerful décor, and equipment and beds designed specially for pediatric patients.
  • Specialty treatment carts (Ortho, ENT, OB/GYN, suture, and sexual assault) are also available to maximize the flexibility of all rooms. Any available ED room can be tailored to meet the unique needs of patients and physicians alike by rolling one of these carts to the patient's location.
  • Two x-ray rooms located within the department, to help expedite diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
  • Conveniently located Laboratory services, with results reported electronically to the ED's main desk.
  • The Emergency Department serves as a gateway to the Chest Pain Center.
